After a wonderful few days in Vienna we hopped the train to Salzburg, only a few hours away it is even more festive than Vienna and a slightly slower pace which was just what we wanted.
The streets are beautifully decorated and the old town is filled with Christmas cheer!
Our first day was decidedly grey, overcast and bone chillingly cold. But it's so charming that it doesn't matter if you can't feel your nose, it's just perfect for wandering with a hot coffee in hand.
You take the funicular to the top of the hill and that's where you will find the most marvelous view of Salzburg...
Even on a dark gloomy day you can't not be impressed by what's below!
On one side you have the old city and on the other you have the mountains, with just enough snow on them it gives you a glimpse as to what lies behind them.
There is actually a museum in the castle but to be honest I didn't find it that interesting, wandering around and taking in the view at all angles is what makes it worth a visit.
On the way back down from the fortress we wandered around the markets stopping to warm up with more Gluhwein, and by the way, the Christmas markets in Salzburg are much better than Vienna, the people are nicer, the goods are better and in my humble opinion just all around nicer.
Thanks for stopping by, be sure to pop back soon to catch the third and final part of our Austria trip.
